The Uprising

The Uprising is a new book by New York Times bestseller David Sirota about the re-emergence of populist politics on both the Right and Left in America. The book, published by Crown, will be released on May 27th, 2008. The Uprising is all new, firsthand investigative reporting from across the country, showing how populism has become a dominant political force in both national and local politics. Sirota, a nationally syndicated newspaper columnist, takes us far from the media spotlight into the trenches where real change is happening - from the headquarters of the most powerful third party in America to the bowels of the U.S. Senate; from the auditorium of an ExxonMobil shareholder meeting to the quasi-military staging area of a vigilante force on the Mexican border.

Who Is David Sirota?

David Sirota is a political journalist, New York Times bestselling author and nationally syndicated newspaper columnist living in Denver. His daily blog can be found at Credo action (his old blog was at this site, but moved). He is a senior fellow at the Campaign for America's Future and a board member of the Progressive States Network - both 501(c)3 nonpartisan research organizations. He writes a weekly, nationally syndicated column for Creators Syndicate which now appears in newspapers with a combined daily circulation of more than 1.6 million readers. Newspapers running Sirota's column weekly include The Denver Post, The San Francisco Chronicle and The Seattle Times. Sirota's first book, Hostile Takeover (Crown 2006), was a New York Times bestseller. He has been profiled in Newsweek and the Rocky Mountain News. The New York Times has called him a "populist rabble-rouser" with a "take-no-prisoners mind-set," while the Philadelphia Daily News labeled him "a progressive powerhouse." The American Prospect said Sirota is "the kind of pundit you'd like to have on your side in a knife fight and wouldn't want to cross in a dark alley." Syndicated columnist Molly Ivins said, "Sirota is a new-generation populist who instinctively understands that the only real questions are 'Who's getting screwed?' and 'Who's doing the screwing?'"

Newark Star-Ledger
"A lively read...Sirota is an enterprising, resourceful reporter." - Newark Star-Ledger, 9/13/08

Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel
"David Sirota is one of those guys who connects dots. In the past few years he's been traveling the country, wondering about you and me, what kind of future we envision for our kids and what we're prepared to do to realize that future. He's compiled his thoughts and those of others, from the Mexican border to the ExxonMobil boardroom, in a new book, The Uprising." - Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel, 7/25/08

Providence Journal
"An audacious account of the re-emergence of populism as a force in American politics...Sirota has a true gift for phrase-making and the pithy comment." - Providence Journal, 6/25/08

Washington Post
"The Uprising is a hard book to dislike or dismiss. Sirota reports cleverly and in pleasing detail about a complex world of political conflict that the journalistic throng obsessed with presidential candidates and their handlers seldom notices...He may not have the Establishment quaking in its Guccis, but his always energetic, often ironic reporting certainly made the quest worthwhile." - Washington Post, 6/3/08

Rocky Mountain News
"Grade: A...Sirota is a true 21st-century political journalist. He has insider access to major players and has fun critiquing politicians' genuflecting to populist sentiment to garner votes...His book examines both the right and left wings of the uprising, making it the perfect tome for rebels of all persuasions." - Rocky Mountain News, 6/12/08

Nashville Scene
"The Uprising is an important book not because of its call to arms - that's hardly novel - but because of its depiction of a political and economic system in a state of flux. Change is in the air for the umpteenth time in American history, and Sirota has visited the front lines as a keen-eyed participant and observer. His accounts of the battles are well written, humorous and full of insider information that should make any political junkie - and potential voter - think long and hard about where we are and what kind of nation we want to be." - Nashville Scene, 6/25/08

Vail Daily
"Sirota is serious about exploring what ails America with his new book The Uprising...A Hunter S. Thompson lite, Sirota is funny at times, self-deprecating and bordering on vicious in places...The Uprising is a quick, fascinating read that succeeds in what it sets out to do: make your blood boil over the level of corruption and indifference that exists among those who are supposed to be leading the way." - Vail Daily, 6/5/08

New Haven Register
"David Sirota makes a living taking on the establishment and his latest book details the more than one dozen disparate movements in the U.S., from the left and the right, who are doing the same thing." - New Haven Register, 5/30/08

5280 Magazine
"No longer divisible into simple red and blue categories, the U.S. political landscape has spawned hundreds of niche grassroots movements in recent years - everything from border-patrolling Minutemen to angry populist supporters of Montana governor Brian Schweitzer to the legion of Lou Dobbs loyalists. In The Uprising, nationally syndicated columnist David Sirota uses a skillful first-person narrative to report from within the ranks of these diverse groups, arriving at a politically provocative conclusion: As working - and middle-class Americans lose their economic stability in a global economy, they're grasping desperately for solutions that won't work - mainly xenophobia - when they'd be better served by banding together to push for change as one economic class." - 5280 Magazine, 5/30/08

New West Magazine
"Sirota shows his reporting mettle...He quotes [sources] honestly, with understanding. He doesn't hold back his analysis either...And that's really the strength of Sirota's new book. He doesn't fabricate cohesion from the unrest. He does what good reporters should do: he asks people questions and records their answers. And he gives you his own take, too. It's gutsy stuff. Sirota's road across this landscape isn't straight. It'll take you to some bizarre outposts. America is at a crossroads, Sirota says, and it's unclear who will swing this crazy vehicle forward, and in what direction." - New West Magazine, 5/6/08

Publishers Weekly
"Sirota chronicles how ordinary citizens on the right and the left are marshaling their frustrations with the government into uprisings across the country and analyzes the effectiveness and longevity of their efforts. Citing developments as disparate as progressive political victories in the Montana state senate and the rise of the California Minutemen militia, the author weaves entertaining case studies, keeping his tone conversational, the narrative fast-paced and the content accessible. Sirota hits numerous high notes, including a fine elucidation of continuing Democratic support for the Iraq War, a breakdown of the 'echo chamber' qualities of beltway television shows like Hardball and salient observations of how and why the Democratic Party severed ties with the liberal uprising of the '60s era...It remains to be seen whether this rage will snowball into something large enough to upset entrenched political systems, but for the time being, this book presents a rousing account of the local uprisings already in effect." - April, 2008

Tom Frank, author of What's the Matter with Kansas?
"After so many decades of fake populism - of revolts by the wealthy, red-state fantasies, and stock-picking grandmas - could we finally be looking at the real thing? In this compelling book, rooted in history but as contemporary as this morning's newspaper, David Sirota gives us reason to hope."

Naomi Klein, author of No Logo
"David Sirota is a clear-headed and principled hell-raiser for economic justice. More like him and we'll have a real uprising on our hands."

Matt Taibbi, Rolling Stone correspondent
"David Sirota is honest, uncompromising, passionate, and a brilliant communicator. He is the most important progressive voice we have in this country. The Uprising should be read by anyone who wants to understand exactly how the ordinary person has been sold out by the political system."

Bill McKibben, author of Deep Economy
"This book engages in the nearly lost art of reporting to tell us what's going on in the many places that the elite media can't be bothered to look. It chronicles just how fed up Americans have become, and nominates a few heroes for them to turn to: that great senator Bernie Sanders, or the activist nun Pat Daly, for instance. It cheered me a good deal to read how many Americans are finally starting to fight back against the rule of greed that has been our lot for too many years."

Tom Hayden, author of The Tom Hayden Reader
"With a historian's and a journalist's storytelling gifts, David Sirota describes the populist tide that so many elites fear and ignore at all our peril: multinational corporations that rip off local communities as if they were resource colonies, a national security state that manipulates our young to bleed for that same empire, and a political elite more concerned with preserving its power than empowering citizens to become self-governing. Since leaving the Beltway behind, David Sirota has become a must-read chronicler in the populist tradition."

Joe Trippi, strategist for Howard Dean and John Edwards
"David Sirota details with clarity the sharp knife of corporate greed pointed at the throat of our democracy - and the populist uprising that may thwart the threat if enough Americans heed his call. If you love your country, buy The Uprising, read it, and act."
